Transcription: A profile of the land is a section view of the land made by a vertical cutting plane. A true shape of the section can be constructed by a viewing plane parallel to the vertical cutting plane. Note that the construction is an approximation due to the very nature of a contour map. Also note that the vertical and horizontal scale may not be the same. Different horizontal and vertical scales are used to emphasize the vertical displacement of the land.
